🚀 The Special Issue on Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) is now live in IEEE Control Systems Magazine (Vol. 46, No. 2, April 2026).
A century after its birth, ESC shows why model-free, online, stability-guaranteed optimization matters — perhaps more than ever.
I had the pleasure of serving as Guest Editor with Jorge I. Poveda and Martin Guay.
This issue brings four tutorial articles by Tiago Roux Oliveira, Miroslav Krstic, Tamer Basar, Jorge I. Poveda, Andrew R. Teel, Mouhacine Benosman, and Alex Scheinker, connecting ESC with:
- games, delays and PDEs
- hybrid systems
- industrial applications
- deep learning and time-varying systems
🙏 Special thanks to Miroslav Krstic for his valuable feedback on the editorial and for his interview in the “Histories of Control” column, and to the Editors-in-Chief Anuradha Annaswamy and Rodolphe Sepulchre, as well as Associate Editors alexandre bazanella and Mihailo Jovanovic, for their constant support, trust and encouragement.
🎨 The cover art? It follows a Warhol-meets-Kurosawa idea: four variations of one image, reflecting four perspectives on Extremum Seeking. “ESC is not about knowing the mountain, but learning how to climb it.” 🐐⛰️
